Aftercare

Density SMP Aftercare Instructions

Your scalp will be sensitive for a few days after your procedure. Scalp micropigmentation is minimally invasive, but following these instructions closely protects your results and helps your skin heal.

Density Procedures

  • What to Expect During HealingMild redness, tenderness, dryness, itching, and light flaking are normal during the healing process. Your SMP may initially appear darker or more noticeable immediately following treatment. The color will gradually soften and lighten as the scalp heals. Small flakes or micro-scabs may also be visible within the hair during the first 7–10 days. Do not judge the final color or density until the scalp has completely healed.
  • Days 0–3
    • Keep the treated scalp completely dry.
    • Do not wash or wet the treated area.
    • Avoid profuse sweating.
    • You may apply a very thin layer of the moisturizer provided, as needed, beginning 24 hours after your procedure. Apply carefully between the hair and do not over-moisturize.
    • Always wash your hands before touching the treated scalp.
  • Days 4–8
    • Gently wash the hair and scalp once daily with the provided baby shampoo.
    • Use your fingertips gently. Do not scrub, scratch, or aggressively rub the treated scalp.
    • Rinse with warm, not hot, water and gently pat dry.
    • Tiny dark micro-scabs or light flaking may occur and can look similar to dandruff within the hair. This is normal.
    • Do not pick, scratch, peel, or intentionally remove flakes or micro-scabs. Allow them to shed naturally.
    • Haircuts may be resumed after 3 days if the scalp is healing normally. Avoid scratching, scraping, or applying excessive pressure to the treated scalp.
  • Day 9 and AfterYou may resume your normal shampooing routine if the scalp is healing normally.
  • For the First 7 Days
    • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms.
    • Avoid hair dye, harsh chemicals, or other products that may irritate the treated scalp.
  • Minoxidil / Rogaine
    • Do not use Rogaine, minoxidil, or similar topical hair-growth products for 21 days after your SMP procedure.
    • Stop using these products 7 days before any future SMP touch-up appointment.
  • Sun ExposureFor the first 14 days, avoid direct sun exposure to the treated scalp. If outdoors, wear a clean, loose-fitting hat when practical. After 14 days, once the scalp is fully healed, use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen during sun exposure. Spray sunscreen may be easier to apply through longer hair. Continued sun protection is strongly recommended to help preserve the SMP and minimize premature fading.
  • ItchingMild itching can occur during healing. Do not scratch the treated scalp. If needed, gently pat the itchy area instead.
  • When to Contact Us or a PhysicianContact Scalpworx and consult a physician if you experience symptoms that are not consistent with normal healing, including increasing redness, significant swelling, worsening pain or tenderness, unusual warmth, pus or drainage, red streaking, fever, or delayed healing.
